The Postman Position - DELIVERY

Jun 24, 2023

All the great players are able to find great position at what we call as Coaches P6 - delivery – or what is sometimes called in the trade the ‘Postman Position’!

Often Coaches say impact is the critical point in the swing, but without a  good delivery position it is highly unlikely (impossible) that a player will be able to enjoy a strong repeatable impact position. However the top of the backswing position (P4) most definitely varies amongst the top players (think Rahm/McIlroy/Johnson/Koepka etc.).

A great exercise, for all levels of players, is to make slow motions swings looking to get into a great P6. See it, Feel it then hit balls with it.

What is the feel of a good Postman Position?

  • Left leg pushing up and starting to post
  • Distance between Left hip to right knee increasing
  • Hips back, chest down
  • Right shoulder loaded and activated
  • Right elbow in front of the right hip and slightly leading the right wrist which is fully loaded
  • Left wrist having increased flexion from top of the backswing (P4)
  • Shaft flexed and loaded
  • Club face (leading edge) in the corridor of straight up for the sky and parallel to the spine angle

Drills/Workstations to encourage this feel:

  • Swing the butt of the club into a wall with hands under the chin
  • Alignment stick in the ground at 45 degree angle (a Justin Rose favorite) to act as a feedback station

Work in front of a mirror at home to get the LOOK, experience the FEELS that come your way, and then go stripe some iron shots at the range!
